Kampala, Uganda — September 2018
Kidega Ogenrwot Moses, a passionate youth leader and then fourth-year Software Engineering student at Makerere University, made a lasting mark when he stood as a strong voice for young innovators during the launch of the Huawei Global ICT Skills Competition in Uganda.
As President of the SCIT(COCIS) at Makerere University and a nationally recognized student leader, Kidega was at the forefront of flagging off Huawei’s ground-breaking initiative. The competition, which attracted over 800 IT students from universities across Uganda, was a rare opportunity for young people to gain access to free, world-class training and certification in fields such as Routing & Switching, Cloud Computing, Data Centers, and more.
“We are very excited about this as students. Huawei has done something that has never happened before at Makerere University. They thought outside the box and reached out directly to young innovators—those with the solutions and ideas to transform the world,” Kidega stated during the roadshow event held at Makerere University on 17th September.
Kidega’s remarks were more than ceremonial—they captured the hope and urgency of a generation eager to harness digital tools to create real change. He recognized Huawei’s effort as more than a competition, calling it a “platform for practical learning, career advancement, and global competitiveness.”
Through this initiative, students gained free access to Huawei’s extensive learning portfolio and stood a chance to represent Uganda on regional and global stages—in South Africa and China respectively. Kidega praised the inclusivity and vision of the program, encouraging fellow youth to embrace the opportunity with courage and commitment.
This moment reflected Kidega’s enduring belief that “technology, education, and opportunity must meet at the grassroots if Uganda’s youth are to rise.” It also showcased his consistent advocacy for youth empowerment, an ethos that defines his leadership journey.
Kidega’s role in events like the Huawei ICT competition speaks to his larger mission: to champion skills, innovation, and real opportunities for young Ugandans.
